In terms of the overall design this Georgian Bureau is typical of the 18th century and a good example of the efforts that were made to try and make functional, utilitarian type furniture look attractive.
It is clear that the flamed mahogany veneers were very carefully chosen and these create a lovely decorative effect, especially when taken in combination with the fabulous original handles.
The bureau also retains its original bracket feet and has a well fitted, attractive and functional interior.
Overall the condition is a good, but worn. It is very clear that the bureau has had a life in which it has been well used and whilst structurally sound there are a few areas to note in terms of aesthetics, as can be seen from the images enclosed. In brief these are various old cup and ring marks to the surfaces, old repairs to the wood and veneer with some old cosmetic damage more visible than normal and various old patches.
That said the bureau is more than fit for purpose and still has real charm. It has had a natural wax polish before being placed onto sale and there is a key for all of the locks.
A very practical piece of furniture indeed.
Circa 1770.
Height 42in.
Width 37.5in.
Depth 19in.
